Searching for an M1 by specific Serial Number - INLAND 6841484

Folks -

I came across some paperwork recently that listed the serial number of the M1 Inland my father had. He sold it around 1988 in the Monmouth County area of New Jersey. I fully regret not taking that weapon when it was offered to me, but at the time I was in no position to store the M1. It was in excellent shape and maintained. I can recall my Uncle (WIA at Chosin Reservoir as a SGT and spent the rest of his days in a wheelchair teaching Chinese History), and my Father (retired with 28 year USMC) discussing that weapon and knowing to keep my mouth shut and just listen while they spoke about its capabilities.

I am trying to post on as many forums as I can to see if there is some way to find this rifle. I fully understand that the current owner may not be in a position to part with it, so I can only offer the information I know about it to share with the current owner.

The Serial Number is Inland 6841484. I understand that shortly after the sale NJ deemed it an assault weapon and the owner may have registered it. I am trying to find a friendly that might have access to that registry but have had no luck so far.

If any of you have any ideas on how to find this needle in the haystack, I sure would appreciate your suggestions. So far, I have or will post on the CMP, USmilitaria and a member of the CMP forum added a post onto the uscarbine30cal site on my behalf.

I took a look through GunBroker for you. This carbine is not currently listed there. It was worth a shot.

Unless you know who pop sold the thing to it's highly unlikely you'll find a specific Carbine. Especially when NJ thinks the Carbine is evil. The Carbine is considered by NJ to be an "assault rifle" and illegal to possess. It appears the Carbine was declared evil long before 1988 though. Something about race riots in 1967 and Plainfield Machine Co being robbed by rioters.

You'd lose that bet. NJ banned M1 Carbines decades ago. Just search New Jersey Administrative Law to see for yourself.

Gents-- You are mixing terminalogy between NJ Law (which is confusing to begin with) and Federal Law. An assault rifle is prohibited in NJ as it has the capability of full automatic fire. An "assault weapon" is defined within NJ law as any semi-automatic pistol, rifle or shotgun that within each of those categories as features that make them "assault weapons". The idiot NJ law makers forgot that as defined by Federal law there is a fourth category called "Other" which they forgot to include in the law and you can all of the "evils" on a weapon defined as "Other".

There used to be a website called USCARBINECAL30M1.com and it actually had a registry where owners voluntarily listed their carbines and their features. I just entered my Underwood and my Inland back in April 2020. I tried to pull it up and check for you but it appears the site is temporarily shut down due to some dispute. If you know which gun dealer handled the transaction, you might get lucky and find that they still have their 1988 records. They may even be willing to contact the person they sold it too and offer to broker a deal to sell it back to you. There are also numerous other registries on the internet and you may get lucky there too. Good luck!

A member on the CMP has reached out to the uscarbine30cal site on my behalf and was told it may take awhile.

I wish I knew what shop he sold them to. I was thinking if I could find out what shops were in business back then I could start calling them.

And no, I don't have any memory of any of the markings. I don't recall any close up pictures of the rifle either.
