I pick up a Remington 700 ADL a while back that did not look to have ever been fired. I was trying to figure out the year it was built. This is normally easy because Remington marked (or marked) their rifles with letter codes on the barrel. The problem I ran into is that the letter samps were not struck all the way. Only the tops of the letters are present. So I was guessing the stamp was EG which could be October 1986 or more likely since its a synthetic stock near what they look like today October 2012.

Wasn't sure so I tried to use Remington's email service on their website to see if they could tell me based on the serial number and it came back with an error. So I tried to call them. Well looks like Remington is no longer reachable there is no answer on the phone number listed. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised. I will miss one of my favorite gun companies.
