K98 NORWEGIAN CONVERSION

Need a little help.

A Norwegian conversion Air Force model as it is "FLY" marked.....the question is whether it is a 30/06 or a 7.62mm Nato conversion as I understand both were done.

This one has "7.62MM" stamped on barrel only. I have seen pictures of a 30/06 conversion that have both "30-06" and "7.62MM" stamp on the same barrel, that not doubt being a 30/06 conversion, actally the picture can be seen on this site at the Knowledge Library under Norway.

I believe it to be a 30/06 conversion as the receiver ring has the vertical recess milled in the face to accomodate the longer round but I'm just wondering about the absence of the 30-06 stamp as the other rifle showed had.

My Norwegian K98k conversion was marked "7.62 mm", which is .30 cal. It was chambered for .30-'06. All you need is a dummy round of .30-'06 to see if it will fit in the chamber.

It will be 30-06.

My Norwegian HAER marked K98kF1 didn't have any 30-06 markings on it, just the 7.62mm on the barrel as yours is.

I'd be inclined to think that maybe some ex-Norwegian K98kF1 might have been restamped with additional 30-06 on importation to USA...?

I always thought the Norwegians started the conversion project and almost immediately stopped it. I have a real 7.62mmNato barrel here as they were sold off after the project ended. I have a very nice .30-06 Norwegian here, very nice shooter and BIG conversation starter. They do turn up for sale but do not bring any premium.

That was the case with the 2nd conversion project from 30-06 which was done in the early 1950's all over again, to 7.62x51 NATO which they considered doing a few years later but decided to just buy new semi-auto's in 7.62x51 instead.

Yes, correct. They started the 7.62mm Nato(.308 Winchester) conversion and stopped almost immediately. They sold off the Nato barrels and the project ended. The .30-06 rifles are nice shooters and the owners of them appreciate them indeed. For some odd reason they do not bring a premium at all when sold. A pity as they are worth extra money.

I saw a 7.62mm NATO Norwegian Mauser for sale here in the UK a few years ago. I should have bought it as it was a really nice looking rifle.
