    Too good to be true?

    Hey Guys,
I'm new to the forum but not new to collecting. While I've always appreciated Enfields, I've just started to collect them aggressively. A few days ago I spied a No.4 Mk 1, 1942-dated rifle that I believe was made at Maltby. It is apparently in factory-new condition. I say "apparently" because I suspect it was refinished. I am attaching the link to the auction listing. I would appreciate any feedback on this gun. I'd like to bid on it, but if it has been reworked, my interest will fade. Many thanks in advance for responding. Gary/Aero626

My two cents is it looks like an “aerosol overhaul”. The metal parts look too uniform in color.

Agreed, refinished, the importer's mark for instance on the barrel front left is filled with black and should be in the white. Other stampings too that should be bare are black. The bolt looks just like rattle can paint.

Compare the 'blueish' colour of the refinished areas to the original black as seen on the front upper handguard cap and on the bolt rib. Whilst the originals were painted black over the Parkerised finish from new, it was definitely not 'blueish'.

That rifle has been painted. Looks like alumahyde to me. One can tell by the way the receiver markings are filled in and no longer crisp. Having taken one out of its wrap brand new before - the engraving was originally done after finish was applied, and should show bright. Even the rear sight was painted. Those came polished and bright from the factory. Another tell that it's paint is the rear sight appears to have a rougher finish - unless some bubba sand blasted the whole thing, rear sight included.
