    Johnson JSAR Opinions

I recently picked up this rifle and I don't know much about them. Comments welcome.

    Thanks

I know numbers are not suppose to match, serial numbers are A & B prefix, early serials are four digit hand stamped

nice ones like your should be in the 5K to 6K price range

    USMC front sight without ears

Very nice. They are a bit more pleasant to shoot with the 7mm barrel, if you can find one. Also, it is possible to flip the right hand mag plate. It will still operate, but capacity will be reduced.

The USMC did not remove the protective front sight ears as policy. They issued them as received and did not have different front sights. It is documented that a few had their front sight ears removed in certain units, however is is quite easy for anyone to cut those ears off but without iron clad provenance it is impossible to declare that it is actually a USMC Johnson. While someone may have cut those off it would be counter productive to use in combat. And "nice ones" go more in the 7,000 to 8,000 range these days.

I had a couple, one was only a collection of parts but functioned so I sold it and kept the good one for a time. This one is nice over all, most are very worn or completely beat. I also had the bayonet, the whole set is worth lots, like RCS says. I shot mine regularly but it would cave in the rim as it ejected and threw them so far I wouldn't bother looking for the brass. It was smooth shooting though.
    Regards, Jim

I knew a collector about twenty years ago that owned Johnson serial number R13 (R for rotary magazine as the box
    magazine was also being tested)

The box mag ended up being the "Sporter" model.
