I have read it her before, a link to the Irish Contract #4 Mk2 myth ?

The story was complete with numbers of units and the how the name was invented by a sales pitch.

Thank you for assisting in a small debate.

Thank you for the thread and links. Drives me crazy that every No4 Mk2 is listed as an Irish Contract. Beautiful Rifles as usual MJ.

I was in my local country sports shop the other week, picking up a few slabs of 12g for clay bashing, and among a handful of SMLE in the rifle for sale rack there was a No.4, that was labelled up as an Irish contract No.4......very nice, but not unused condition, and it was priced at £2495.......
I know them well in there, so I said "That's a bit of an optimistic price on that No.4, you'll be doing well to get 50% of that!?"
Was told its on sale or return basis on behalf of a customer, and the owner thinks that's what its worth, incl the shop's commission, because its an Irish contract rifle.....
I said, better send it back to him now then
