Do you know anything about these SMLE Markings?

    G’Day Enfielditis Sufferers,

A recent acquisition that followed me home has some interesting heritage that I need a little help deciphering.

A 1958 No 1 Mk III*from RFI Ishapore, in .303. Mechanically, very good condition, showing little actual Service work. Furniture bears the story of a typical rifle that has been transported in a variety of ways in Asia.

The markings on the Body (receiver) ring suggest a more colourful story than spending all it’s time in India.

Here's a closer detail of the marks from the LHS of the body:

The top star may possibly be the Indonesian TNI’s symbol that looks like this in full:

But then again… it might not be. The stamped star is 6 pointed, like the Star of David, the TNI’s symbol is a pentagon.
Quite honestly, I’m not able to find suitable records online or in any of my References for the symbols.

The double struck “U-in-a circle” is the interesting mark. I don’t know which of the symbols, the circle or the star represents the Country of ownership or the Service or Unit.

If you have any information, please do share it. I’m sure there’s a few other people who would be grateful for the knowledge too.

    Thank you.

Thanks giove, that's where I was heading.

I've had a previous identificaiton odne by a very helful Hebrew speaking fellow who knows a little of the IDF history and small arms.

Here are some photos in that enquiry:

I think they're similar, but not quite the same.

I'll need some more information from someone with better knowledge of Hebrew and the IDF, I think.

IDF had various stamps on metal. I don't think there is any chance to specifically assign one variant of those to something particular like a specific unit.

Thank you, that is quite a fair thing to expect. Perhaps I was too loose with my suggested words. I wasn't intending it like the specifics of butt disk markings that the Britishicon Army used to specify Units. Was thinking more like the division between Services? You can tell my Hebrew is as good as my conversational Lithuanian....

I think I might start another thread, focusing on the Israeli connection to see if we can flush out some people with good knowledge of the IDF's early days...
