    To Dream The Impossible Dream

Looking for lrads on a BSA Sportsman 5 magazine, of any other magazine that can be made to ft and function for a No7MkI rifle.

Looks like I missed out on the one Warren had.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. They tend to make around GBP £100 on ebay (I have sold quite a few)
The trick is to pick up a complete Sportsman 5 rifle as they tend to make sub GBP£20 (well they did last time I bought one)

Are you aware of the work needed to alter the magazine from a 'bottom-loader' to a 'top-loader' ?

The magazine needs to be cut open and the locking mechanism moved from the bottom of the magazine to the top and then trimmed down and reassembled.

Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

    Hal,
    See for example,
    HOLTS Auctioneers
    MARCH 2022 SEALED BID AUCTION
    Lot 14205, Lot 14215, Lot 14219
Look at the estimates - not much for the whole rifle+magazine
Ask one of the forummers who is a Registered Firearms Dealer to bid for you, and sell you the magazine?

Or alternatively you could bid yourself on Lot 2689 and if you win it ask Holts to post the .22 mag to you. Then leave the remaining magazines with Holts to sell in their next sealed bid sale to offset some of your costs.

Don't forget to add 30% commission to the purchase price, plus shipping and the cost of getting rid of the rifles as they are not worth a lot now and will be worthless once stripped of the magazines.

Even with their magazines they only fetch £20 + 25% commission at the Newark Auctions

Unfortunately no. I have contacted a couple advertised leads in the UKicon, and as soon as they see I am in the US, they no longer return any e-mails.

Are mags now banned from export from the UK?

I do have a lead on one or two now on this side of the world.
