Criterion barrels

I talked to a local gunsmith, who says he can put a new barrel on a 1917. He was aware of the potential receiver crack problem, too. Numrich has Criterion barrels for a reasonable price. Anyone had any experience with these??

they dont come cut for the extractor, or the front sight key.
i say , be patiant and find a JA. RIA or other GI barrel.
i have yet to see a cracked receiver ring on a 1917, and iv rebarreled a lot of them.
i have seen a cracked reciever under the rear sight, but thats the only one.
17,s are pretty soft, and bend easy.

I took a look on the Gun Parts Co site. I did not see any Criterion barrels. They are good barrels, for sure. The barrels I saw are not worth the money. Once in a while a JA 2 groove barrel turns up. They are quite nice. Start looking, good luck.

if you add this to the repro barrels.
to mill the extractor cut 65.00, to cut the sight key, 75.00, parkerize and or blue to match, 45.00, install, 75.00 finish ream and test fire 25.00. plus return shipping, 30.00 .
thats 315.00 plus the cost of the barrel.
and those are my rates, that are below the standard hour rate of 85.00 to 95.00 and hour.
i charge 45.00 an hour, for standard work, 75.00 an hour on a lathe or mill.
most shops are 100.00 and hour machine shop time.
if you found a JA, RIA, or other {real} 17 barrel, for 300.00 or less. it would be cheaper, and youd have a real GI barrel, and when it comes time to sell the rifle, that does make a defferance.

Keep an eye out for sporters. Some often have uncut barrels.

Criterion has good barrels for sure and you can get them ready to install (with sight and extractor cutout) now that they have the timing thing down but you wont get a Criterion from Gunparts, you'll get a GPC barrel - okay I guess but nothing to write home about and still needs a lot of work to be GTG.

i installed a GP barrel for a customer a year ago, it did have some issues, but nothing that was too bad, had to fit the front sight after the key was cut, the barrel was a bit too large, not much , just enough to make it a bear.
seemed a little soft, the twist is right hand as well, shot ok, from a report back from the customer.
but by the time all the work was done, and it was back in his hands, he could have picked up a real GI 17 barrel, for less money, and likely it would have shot better.
also,
DONT BE TEMPTED TO BUY A REPLACEMENT GI BARREL FROM GP OR SARCO.
they are barrels that were relief cut, and have a washer added to bring up the gap.{eyeroll} i wont touch them, they are junk, and will make great tomato stakes.

2flasargent i have a m17 Eddystone barrel as a spare if you are interested? Is in good shootable condition would have about 70 percent rifling left no pitting etc, give me a yell if interested regards Al.
