Initial Issue of M1903 rifles to the National Guard

By the way, did a little research on the Dick Act of 1903. It did resuult in the spending of about $53M in new equipment for the National Guard between 1904 and 1916, rifles, included.

I believe the Navy and Marine Corps was still using Krags till around 1909. Krags were definetly used in the training centers 1917-1918. I remember one old timer many years back telling me he had a 30-30 during The Great War, I thought he was a little senile! I now know he meant a .30-40 since I found a picture of one of my uncle's father with one 1918 at Camp Lewis, Washington.

In Elton Mackin's book (his WWI diary - "Suddenly We Didn't Want to Die"), he mentions a Army battalion passing by that was armed with Krags. The Marines were making fun of them because of the Krags. At least one battalion used Krags in France.

There were some .30-30's purchased by the government during WW1. Used by the forestry service.

Think Elton mentioned that the guys with Krags were engineer troops.
