He was horribly racist in some of his views and policies
I think that is putting it a bit strong. One has to remember that Churchill was brought up and educated in the Victorian era and so, unsurprisingly, some of his values and language reflect that era. When we look back at him in 2022 it is not surprising, therefore, that we find some of the things he said and, perhaps, did inappropriate.
They may have been consistent with the times....the times when the CSA still existed that is.
He openly spoke out against blacks and Indians and advocated white purity for England. This would have been consistent with the British elite of his time perhaps but it was more than inappropriate.
He was horribly racist in some of his views and policies but his ability to lead when the pressure was on is undeniable.
North Carolina you say?
IMHO what distinguished Churchill aside from his breadth of vision and great wit & power of expression, was his moral courage; the rarest kind.
This was demonstrated most of all not in the 1940s, but in the '30s when almost no one wanted to hear what he was saying about Nazism and German revanchism and he had nothing to gain personally by saying it.

I'm going to ask you guys to get off each other's cases; and I'll do it in the words of the esteemed prophet, Monty Python (from The Holy Grail, Scene16: "You Can't Stop An errrr Prince?? From Singing"):
Father: "Please! Please! This is supposed to be a happy occasion! Let's not bicker and argue about who killed who."
There's a little racism in us all. Let's just do better, and discuss it elsewhere, please.

"Qué?" As Manuel would say - what bickering where Bob?
It was just a friendly slap on the shoulder I swear.
We just don't give our moderators enough to do around here do we? Damn boring job eh?
As for Winston, this is a brilliant little story that starts at 9:05

Ludendorff, was it Ludecke or Winterbotham who referred to him being found aprés la guerre dancing naked around the carcass of a horse sacrificed in some fanciful nordic occult ceremony?
No surprise I suppose considering he was mixed up with Eckhardt and the Thule Gessellschaft who bragged, "I have opened Hitler to the [occult] powers; he is the man who will dance the tune!"
And if we go back a little farther we come to this interesting fellow who founded the Thule Society, out of which came the German Workers Party; soon to become the NSDAP.
