Yard sales again today, one neighborhood traditionally does it on the 4th.

Went through once and was mopping up on a side street and came out on one I had just been on 15 minutes before and I see military stuff in a yard that wasn't there before. So I stop, all modern stuff from Afghanistan but it was in good shape and I picked up two soft armor sections for the sides, a canteen and a shovel with digital camo case. The guy doesn't have change so I ask if he has anything else. He brings out a duffle and dumps it and there's this interesting wool hat.

I was curious and figured it was something the Afghans wore and he said he was required to wear it on occasion when he was over there. It was not issued but he was told to buy one on the open market there and they wore them on certain missions. I figured off duty but that was not the case.

So the story is, this is a combat worn hat from Afghanistan by US Army individual to blend in better with the natives.

I did research it when I got home and it is apparently true, this was done over there. It's called a Pakul and is made of wool. I don't think I had it rolled up properly when I took the photos, probably should be rolled up one more time.

I don’t read Arabic, but usually the crossed swords and palm tree is Saudi. Quite a few people wear hats like these there, usually Afghans. They Saudis have millions of foreign workers that come to labor there from all over the world so you see them quite often.

I’m assuming it was made in Saudi. I noticed that right away. It is not identical to the Saudi emblem but it is close.

That's the colour Shah Ahmed Masood used to wear IIRC. Needs to be rolled up a bit more ; looks like a crushed tschapka at the moment!
