Cody model 71 back in action

I’ve loaded up some ammo for my “Buffalo Bill Cody” Model 71 Mauser hunting rifle and dang if it don’t shoot nice. This rifle was supposedly sporterized by the Freund Brothers for Mr. Cody to hunt with. I don’t know if this is all true or not, but whoever did the conversion did a very nice job. The rifle is very well balanced and light and has a very nice, light trigger pull. I really like it.
My first firing was yesterday. I shot from my deck to my target at about 50 yards.
I full length sized some 348 brass and seated a powder coated 389 grain bullet over 31 grains of IMR 4198 with no filler. OAL was 3.00”. I fired four shots first and then my son shot one more which landed in about the same spot. Even with a broken extractor, the case fell out easily with the gentle tap from a ramrod. It was a good day.

For some reason the pictures of the targets and bullets have been rotated counter clockwise. We were using a 6 o’clock hold on the target. Rounds were hitting 4” high. I adjusted rear sight down for next session.
