Interesting photo, I take it US army ranger wit Canadian troops. If I'm not mistaken the first US casualities of the war were at the failed Dieppe raid.

The losses are sad but the lessons learnt at Dieppe may well have saved lives on D Day.

No, those would be the casualties at Pearl Harbor and in the Pacific theatre. Those at Dieppe may have been the first in Europe, but not the first for the US.
