Yard Sales, Flea Markets and Antique Shops 2023

My season officially began today. I think a little later than usual as I wasn't motivated to go out. Very first yard sale I stopped at had a 1943 shirt an and Ike Jacket for $10 for the pair. The shirt is in excellent condition, the Ike Jacket has a few repairs.

I took some interior shots of the shirt to show the "Gas" lining.

After the yard sales, we went to a flea market I haven't been able to go to for months due to bad weather on Fridays almost constantly. Found a few weirder items there that I opted to bypass but this came home. I believe it to be an original Japaneseicon rifle sling. It is missing the metal button but I have a lot of them around. Leather is cracked and worn but it isn't brittle. I did not have an original sling so this is something new for me. $20 which I thought was a steal.

It is a sling for the Type 38 rifle. I dug up a button, polished it up in the shape of the Japaneseicon ones and put it on my 38. I can't believe the guy sold it to me for that price. He isn't a novice either. We were talking about a lot of things while I was there.

Today I went back to the same sale I got the jackets from. They had a Navy White jacket there with a USS Enterprise tab on it. It was bugging me that I didn't get it because if it were the WWII Enterprise, that would be really awesome. I checked it out closer and found DSA niumbers on it that makes it the Nuclear USS Enterprise but I still think that was cool so I got him down to $5.

Here's the Navy shirt. I had to treat if a few times as the left sleeve was badly rust stained. Took three treatments of lemon juice in the sun and then a wash cycle but it's clean now. Still has an ink spot to get rid of but I'm not too concerned with that at the moment. Not really anything special about it other than it's from an airman on the Nuclear USS Enterprise. I think it's from March of 1968. Could be 1966 also as I'm not sure that is a correct date month and 1966 doesn't have date month.

Slim pickings this weekend. Nothing at the yard sales and I went to a lot. One guy has some miscellaneous common odds and ends I had no interest in. He has some WWII stuff but I couldn't talk him into parting with any of it. That left the antique flea market I hit for the first time of the season this morning. Just this East Germanicon late helmet but it was good deal at $20. Size II made in 75

So if I remember right from when I got my first East Germanicon helmet, there are three distinct types, not counting the really rare ones which includes the one that may or may not exist, the WWII version.

The first version is the one with the WWII style leather liner with three exposed rivets on the outside. Then this one which is either the 2nd or 3rd type. I don't know which and I don't know what the difference is between the two, they look the same to me.

I figured it out. This helmet is a M56/76 which makes no sense as it is a 75. Makes it the third type. No rivets. The second type still has the rivets but it also has the new liner system which is unchanged into the 56/76 I'm thinking these names were created by someone that doesn't know a lot about these helmets.

I spent two years looking for a jeep shovel not knowing I had one in my shed last year, found a second one a few weeks after that and a third today. Couldn't pass it up for $3.00. Got a Korean made folding shovel and an early Vietnam ammo pouch along with the little medical bag I found yesterday. Didn't pay more than $3.00 for any of them so it was a cheap weekend.

You surely excel in this sort of thing. The kit you come up with, and what you score it for impresses the likes of me, at least.
