Late to this, but the markings are legitimate. I have owned well over 150 Rosses over the years, and have seen 4 of the Mk II*** and 2 Mk II***** with CEF markings. I have even owned a Long Lee with CEF markings. As the above posts note, the first contingent overseas did not have enough Mk III to go around so were supplemented with others. However, there is NO evidence that any of these rifles actually went to combat in Franceicon. The Canadian troops spent over 4 months training at Salisbury in Englandicon before getting to France in 1915 so by then the older Rosses (and long Lees) were replaced and presumably shipped back to Canadaicon.

Would that ever be a neat rifle. Too bad it's gone, love to have seen it.

There's Mk.II in the Museum of the Regiments drilled and tapped for the Winchester A5 scope and which is stated to have been used by Pte. Henry Norwest in Franceicon.

Love to see it if you do. Those were always one of my favorite, I've seen the odd picture of them even in the trenches with UKicon troops.

I was intrigued by your post so I did a little digging and found that the Royal Rifles of Canada did indeed send two battalions as part of the CEF but they were the 12th battalion sent over in 1914 and the 171st Battalion sent over in 1916. My personal opinion and I've been wrong before is that no rifle sent over as part of the CEF would be stamped 8 RR as in 8th battalion Royal Rifles.
