It seems that ear plugs were not often seen in shooting sport catalogs and magizine advertising before the 1960s.
The ear plugs pictured are made of celluloid the container is made of aluminum

Those are neat Gary.

They must have been stored in a controlled environment (not in a hot garage). Lots & lots of old celluloid has just disintegrated by now.

You can look at old photos of shooters, no one is wearing muffs or plugs. I did see a picture of General Hatcher's brother, holding a rifle. He had cotton plugs in his ears.

And those old shooters can't hear worth a flip. I worked summers for the Natl Park Service as a reenactor in the 1970s, firing 12 pounder Napoleans. I hear like a 90 year old.
