There was a lot of experimentation done in 1945 with the M1icon carbine. There are Inland barrels in 22 caliber.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. There was the 22 Gustovsen (sp?), which was a necked down 30 carbine, IIRC, but it lacked case capacity. Then cam the .224 Winchester. It had the same case as the current 223, but a shorter, stubby 52 grain bullet. It was designed for the Winchester Light Military Rifle. Armalite used the .222 Remington special (longer than the 222 Remington) that was renamed .223 to prevent confusing the two rounds.

I think the 5.7 x 28 might be a good round for the carbine. Pressure is not too excessive at around 50,000psi and cartridge OAL is not too long to fit the action. One would have to secure a 22 barrel and chamber it, but it looks do able to me. 5.7 x 28 appears to be the cartridge of the future.
