This worn Martini has been in my possession since 1973. It was recovered in Zululand about two years previously. Using modern technology, its regimental markings were enhanced in 2007. You can draw your own conclusions.

Sapper, have a look at the fourth photo. There you will see 80 over 464. Those who are familiar with regimental markings on British military Martinis will understand "Rifle No. 464, 80th Regiment". For further POSSIBLE leads, refer to a Zulu War history book.

This is a great rifle, Terry. Looks to be a third pattern upgraded from first pattern. I've got one too, serial number B9230, made in Nov. 1872 as a 1 patt. and then turned into a 3 patt. What's the serial number on yours, please? I'll add it to one of my endless series of spreadsheets.

My rifle's serial number is F1527. I think that you already have it. Its possible Zulu War connection is covered in "Washing of the Spears" by Morris, P 471 - 474.
