Unfortunately the Case No.2 for the WS 38 has a piano hinge and the Case Spare Valves for the WS 19 has something similar across the full length of the back. All bits of kit for radios were stenciled or stamped with a number with a Z.A. prefix. I don't think Cinder's case is radio related.

I would have thought that this example is a surplus spare valve case repurposed for another use.

WWII British Army Parachute Reg Wireless Set No 22 - Z.A 14041 Spare Valves Set for sale | eBay
The WS No. 22 along with the WS No. 38 were carried by paratroopers in WWII although I wouldn't want to have been the wireless operator stuck with humping the 22 set which weighed 36.5 lbs.! What is for sale in your picture appears to be a home made step down transformer and filter to produce rippled D.C. and is not military. The 22 Set was a scaled down 19 Set with no provision for intravehicular intercom or long range voice communications.

Here is the spare valve case that I have in my collection. I believe from looking at what has been offered for sale the same "physical sized metal box" was used for several different numbered "Case Spare Valves", this example being a number 4A. The internal linings may have differed of which is missing in this example.

By referencing the dimensions shown in the pics below one can see that this case is a little larger than known examples of Thompson magazine case, https://www.milsurps.com/showthread.php?t=77655 (bottom of page), although the height is about the same. As I previously alluded to, it could be that a different spare valve case was used for the Thompson magazine case or there was more than one size of Thompson mag box.

I wondered if anyone was going to notice that.

That's the spare valve case for the R 106 HRO radio set which was a militarized commercial radio mainly made for the U.S. Military but also supplied to the Britishicon.
