Springfield Armory - The Armory News

    Hello all,

Thought I'd share a neat recent eBay purchase.

I read somewhere (it's been a long time ago now!) that the Springfield Armory had an employee newsletter.
Old-school managerial stuff like this is super interesting to me and combining that with Springfield Armory is just too cool.

So I created a saved search on eBay and I finally found not just one issue but an entire bound set!

Looks like I have September 1941 through August 1943.

I'll be flipping through it and try to share anything neat I run across. If anyone has something specific they'd like me to look for, I can definitely keep an eye out!

    -Ryan

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. The book is bound starting with the August '43 issue and going backward in time. So that's how I'm going to read it for my own ease haha.

Here's the first few interesting things I pulled out. Many many more to come!

    August 1943

    • This is the final issue of this newsletter. Stating:
o "The War Department has reached the conclusion that all publications of this nature have performed a most valuable function since their inception, and they are being discontinued at this time solely in the interests of conservation of manpower, funds, and materials. The Armory News gladly complies with this decision in order to expedite the prosecution of the war.”

    • On enbloc clips, Page 11:
o “The Cartridge Clip for the Garandicon is complete manufactured in the Welding and Clip Section at the Water Ships. Entering the building, one sees long ribbons of steel being drawn into large presses. Heat Treat Furnaces are in continuous operation.
o The Clip material comes in 500 lb. coils. These are placed on stock reels and fed through straightening rolls and progressive dies which shape the Clips on 110-ton presses.”

    • Personals of the Month, Page 12:
o “There is an unofficial beautiful leg contest now going on in the Adjutant’s office. As we go to press the contest is deadlocked between Peg O’Hara and Rita Murphy. Will some good looking young officer please drop in and break the tie vote?”
