6 Feb 2024 Garand Picture of the Day

He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose
There are no great men, only great challenges that ordinary men are forced by circumstances to meet.

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Danishicon they say...

" The Danes would continue to use the Garandicon as their primary infantry arm until 1975 when it was replaced by the Germanicon-made HK G3, adopted as the Gevær M/75. Garands would continue to soldier on with the Danish as a second-line and Home Guard rifle through the 1990s, when it would finally be replaced by Colt Canadaicon C7 (M16A2) rifles and C8 (M4A1) carbines, which would be adopted as the Gevær M/95 and Karabin M/96, respectively. As such, the Danes would be the last Western European NATO member to field John Garand’s vaunted 30.06."
    Regards, Jim

    Yeah, but it's sooooo good!

By-the-way, I was almost in your backyard in 1999. I was initially selected to be part of Operation Echo, the Canadianicon contingent of CF-18's, pilots and groundcrew sent to Aviano air base in 1999 to support 441 Squadron from CFB Cold Lake in Alberta. I was an Airfield Engineer, not a 'ramp monkey' but it would be an excellent opportunity for members of 4AES to support NATO operations and gain operational experience. My boss was already over there and wanted me on the ground with him but I got bumped when a senior officer pulled rank to get his son on that mission.

    What a pity.
I still have to meet an American military who does not like it in Aviano.

That was obviously ironic... No cigarettes for me, but good food, good booze and a few other things (no drugs, never in my life. Not even tried once) are always welcome.
