Enfield No. 5 Carbine
My LGS just got a bunch of various rifles in from a deceased collector. They asked me to help them with the garands, but I also saw about a dozen Arisakas and several Lee Enfield's, which I don't know much about, but thought the jungle carbine was pretty cool so I got it. My research says this maker made the most. Is there anything special or just a run of the mill? I have an SMLE III but just ventured a little further into the Lee Enfield. Any knowledge you gentlemen could give would be greatly appreciated,

I would suggest that it may be totally unique - I have never seen, or heard of a left handed No5.
Although it woudn't be the 1st Lefty seen in US hands :

Mine are not the best, but they are not too bad. I can think of lots of Enfields I'd rather have but instead of constantly striving for more, sometimes it's good to be satisfied with what one has...

As A de E says a very rare No5 from Fazakerley.
Just a stock standard No5 with a reversed photo of it. Looks to be in reasonable condition on the outside for its age and probable service life.

The carbine as a whole had a relatively low production of about 250,000. Of those about 170,000 were made by Faz. Bayonets are hard to find.
The rubber pad on the butt does nothing to help shooting. By now it's probably pretty hard, and has less surface area than a normal steel one.
Don't throw it away however, it's still original.

As of a couple years ago, Liberty Tree had new old stock butt pads. I replaced mine with one and it’s definitely an improvement.

Many guys will replace a #5 butt with a #4 butt for shooting purpose. It takes all the bite out and you can find a long, I only had one long butt for #5 in time.

I have an M44 that I worried about the kick. It ended up not being that bad. Once I get a chance to shoot it I’ll decide whether to replace it, I guess, but it’s nice to know there are options if it does kick a lot. Thanks!

They are supposedly bringing in another with a matching bayonet. Are there bayonets that specifically match a rifle?

I have a full assortment of modern slip-on recoil pads in my shooting bag. I slip on the appropriate one for whatever I'm shooting at the time. The butt stays original when on display in the armory, and I get the benefits of a modern pad (for shooting anything other than sanctioned CMP matches). I also have long-enough arms that appreciate the extra length of pull.

Bayonets are issued from a locker in stores with no regard as to anything else. Just if they fit or not.

The bayonets for the No1, No4 and No5 rifles are very different, BUT, any (original) No5 bayonet will fit any No5 rifle.
Unless it is a copy - some of the Indian Repros do not fit at all and others are 'not a very good fit'.
The No5 bayonet is possibly the most copied bayonet in the LE family.
