On Easter Sunday afternoon, 1959, my father took a borrowed DCM Remington Rand .45 and me out to shoot. I had asked him if we could do this, as I had discovered Jeff Cooper's writings and just had to try out the famed 1911. Well, he let me shoot it at a beer can in classic one-hand stance, sans ear protection. The can remained unscathed somehow (!) but I was hooked.

He paid the owner $25 for the gun and it was under the tree for Christmas, 1960. I did a few minor modifications to it over the years, just enough to make it "non-original"--but at a glance it still looks very GI.

Took it out this afternoon, exactly 50 years later. It shot just fine, and yes, I DID hit the can repeatedly this time.

It's been a good 50 years.

Bat, I have my Father's DCM RR that he purchased at about the same time you got yours. Great story and it brought back many good memories for me too. Thanks for sharing.

My father just left me his 1966 Government Model. I first got a chance to fire it at the age of 10 on a New Year's Eve. I could barely hang on to it, but I had a blast and was indelibly hooked as well.

thank you sir , i too have my fathers 45 , it was given to me in sept. 2000 the day he was told he had a couple months to live , he died nov 11 of that year , i had shot it back when as you did ,
