Angry CMP out of M44US with sights

As of 4/21/09, CMPicon is out of M44US with sights.

No word yet if they will reopen mail order of the M44US w/o rear sights.

    Maalasef!

A Collector's View - The SMLE Short Magazine Lee Enfield 1903-1989. It is 300 8.5x11 inch pages with 1,000+ photo’s, most in color, and each book is serial-numbered. Covering the SMLE from 1903 to the end of production in India in 1989 it looks at how each model differs and manufacturer differences from a collecting point of view along with the major accessories that could be attached to the rifle. For the record this is not a moneymaker, I hope just to break even, eventually, at $80/book plus shipping. In the USA shipping is $5.00 for media mail. I never bought one of the CMPicon Mossberg 44s. I had two Mossberg .22s for years, a semiauto (c.1940s) and a bolt action (c.1960s). I thought they were not really that great quality so I passed on the 44s. I sold my two Mossbergs a few years ago at my yard sale. Are the US versions better than the commercial ones?

Not markedly. They have some "military charisma," but that's for collectors.

I sent my application in on April 13 for an M44. Maybe I ordered the last one?

As of 6/26: The CMPicon north store has M44's with and without sights. I just bought an M44 without sights for $95. and it looks almost new.

Sights are available, 60-80 bucks. Sometimes at small gun shows, cheaper. I picked up 2 spares at such a show for 5 bucks apiece.
I wonder if Publius ever shot those Moss. he had. May have surprised him. The 44us and other Moss. target rifle will shoot right with the M-52's, the 'ulimate target rifle'. Yes, they were made to a price, plastic parts, etc. but preformance was not sacraficed!

I like the M44 and I think it is a fine rifle, but don't think for a minute that it is in the same class as the 52....or 40x, M12 for that matter. It will not shoot with the 52's, 40X's or M12's. You can buy five M44's for the price of a Mod. 52 and there is a reason for that.

My M44US is a tack driver. It shoots better than I can.

Hi guys, just wanted to say that only yesterday I took both my Moss 44 and my tricked out (by Al Freeland) Rem 37 (that I used to get my distinguished rating over 40 years ago when I could bend my body more easily) to the range and both shot 1" groups at 100 yds using Eley match ammo. The Mossberg is a KICKASS shooter, make no mistake about it. Also, I don't believe I've ever had a Mossberg that didn't shoot well. JMHO, Steve

I think Havlin sells the rear sight assembly for a reasonable price. They also make an adapter that screws in the original holes so you can mount any scope. I dont work for Havlin and they dont work for me. Just passing on a resource for the fine, old rifles.
