OT..Another Hero passes

Ed Freeman

You're an 19 year old kid. You're critically wounded, and dying in the jungle in the Ia Drang Valley , 11-14-1965, LZ X-ray, Vietnam . Your infantry unit is outnumbered 8-1, and the enemy fire is so intense, from 100 or 200 yards away, that your own Infantry Commander has ordered the MediVac helicopters to stop coming in..




You're lying there, listening to the enemy machine guns, and you know you're not getting out. Your family is half way around the world-12,000 miles away-and you'll never see them again. As the world starts to fade in and out, you know this is the day.




Then, over the machine gun noise, you faintly hear that sound of helicopter, and you look up to see an un-armed Huey, but it doesn't seem real, because no Medi-Vac markings are on it.




Ed Freeman is coming for you. He's not Medi-Vac, so it's not his job, but he's flying his Huey down into the machine gun fire, after the Medi-Vacs were ordered not to come.




He's coming anyway.




And he drops it in, and sits there in the machine gun fire, as they load 2 or 3 of you on board.




Then he flies you up and out through the gunfire, to the doctors and nurses.




And, he kept coming back.13 more times.and took about 30 of you and your buddies out, who would never have gotten out.




Medal of Honor Recipient, Ed Freeman, died March 25th, 2009 at the age of 80, in Boise, ID.May God rest his soul.

Wasn't this a while back? I think I remember it was last August.

Being our war was an unpopular war, hero's like Mr. Feeman do not get the attention they should.

Not sure about the actual date. I posted the exact e-mail I received about it today. It states March 25 of 09.

The death of Ed "Too Tall" Freeman was well reported by the "mass media" back in August of last year as was his belatedly being rewarded the Congressional Medal of Honor back in 2001. He was also well covered by the press following his heroics in Vietnam. Maybe you should read a little more and repeat "talking points" a little less. JMHO

TDH, thanks for putting things back in perspective about the passing of a great American hero. I didn't mean to jump on Maniac, but one should ideally do at least a little research before automatically "killing the messenger." How would anybody, except a close few, even know about this man and his brave deeds if it was not for the "mass media" Maniac decries?

Wikipedia hardly qualifies as mass media, dnikkor, I was speaking of the leftist television and newspapers that would rather gush about Obama's dog than the passing of an american hero. My apologies for offending your "sensibilities".

I know I started this "love fest" calling you out for your knee-jerk "talking points" slogan about the horrible "mass media" and I should let sleeping dogs lie, however I read in my local daily newspaper and watched national television news last August about the death of this brave man, well before any "gushings" about Obama's dog. Apparently Rush must not have been talking about his death back then since you apparently missed it and thus his death last year was news to you until a couple of days ago. My "sensibilities" were not offended but I am quite sick and tired of people who repeat mindless dogma slamming the media without bothering to see if there is any reason to slam them in the first place.

And I apologize to all here for taking attention (belatedly to some) away from this true American hero. I also apologize for breaking my own rule about bringing "politics" into this forum that really should be about our shared interest in USGI M1 Carbines. There are plenty of other forums around for people to fling feces at each other.
