1903 Picture of the Day,,if I may

My grandfather, Pvt Frank Talley, 115 Field Artillery, 1st Tennessee Infantry Division, Camp Sevier, SC in 1917, just before shipping out to France. Mr Talley lied to the Army and told them he knew all about mules, because he didn't want to be in the infantry. Mr Talley passed away in 1964 in Greenwood, MS and is buried in the National Cemetery in Memphis. Mr Talley was born in Bridgeport, Al but moved to Memphis. He worked as a steamfitter till he retired.

I would say that Mr. Talley was a smart man. Do you have any of his 782 gear?

We have his medals, his dog tag (aluminum), postcards, pictures, and some accroutements that look like they may have gone on a uniform. I also have a coin or medal, made of bronze, that was given to him when he joined the American Legion in France, it lists the Allied nations on the reverse and on the front has the American Eagle.

Although I live in SC I had never heard of Camp Sevier, SC. There are some great photos at this site. http://www.gwpda.org/photos/location.htm

I looked at the photos of Camp Jackson,SC (now Fort Jackson) and was suprised to see the name of the photographer being the same as the photos of my dad in 1918. Dad had three photos after his tour in France (AED). I would like to post some of the photos but having scanner problems.

A postcard he sent my grandmother:

I sent copies of this stuff to the North Carolina Historical Society a while back. The retired Lt Col I was talking with was trying to do a history of Camp Sevier, he said little was really known about it to many people.

Just a quick edit, I noticed on some of his early correspondence that he put 116th FA, then started putting 115th FA, I'm not sure what the reason was, although my sister seems to think he just made his 6s look like 5s, who knows.

Frank went from Camp Sevier, to the American Cantonment in France, he served at Chateu-Thierry, Belleau Wood and the Meuse-Argonne. In one of his letters he says that if the German artillery got your range you were in deep trouble. He also served in the occupation of Germany at the end of the war. He was mustered out and came home to Memphis. If you are familiar with Memphis, he helped to build the Sears Building in Mid-Memphis.
