Unknown Yataghan Sword Bayonet.

I obtained the following bayonet believing it to be a pattern 1856 British Sword Bayonet to fit the .577" caliber Enfield "2-band" Rifled Infantry Short-Musket.

It is typically British in design in that it has pressed-leather “Cross Hatched” grips and the rivets in the position I would expect .

The length is not correct ; but similar; in that the Blade length is 22 inches and overall length is 27 and one eighth inches compared with an expected Blade Length of about 22.7 inches and Overall Length of: 28.1 inches The Muzzle Diameter fitted in that the muzzle ring diameter is ~7/8" (internal).

Metal furniture on the handle is of iron (steel); latch is of external spring-steel type with an integral push-button and the slot width is about seven sixteenths of an inch.

The Scabbard was as expected in that it had black stitched leather with steel furniture. (Throat and Drag.)

The Enfield bayonets I understand were popular with North and South during the American Civil War; so I assume many guys in the USA will be familiar with the type.

The problem is apart from being slightly shorter, instead of the "cock's-comb" upper finial, with lower "button" finial I would expect; it has a Quillon.

I know of no other British Bayonet with a Quillon except for the quite rare version of the British Pattern 1907 Mk1 "SMLE" a few of which were made with a hooked Quillon.

This example is also made in Germany not England; as it has the Kings Head Trade Mark of the Solingen maker “Weyersberg”. This is the only mark I can find on the bayonet and leads me to believe it is Pre 1883 as Weyersberg joined with another Solingen maker Kirschbaum in that year and thereafter the “Knights Head Logo of Kirschbaum was added to the Weyersberg “Kings Head”.

Anyone any idea which Country this Bayonet was made for and which Rifle ???? I have tried it on all sorts of Rifles from the period ; but it does not fit any tried so far.

PhayzR	OMG! I found an extremely rust bayonet in the storage shed on the duplex im renting, and decided to do a bit of research. I have absolutely no knowledge of antique weapons outside of what Ive learned in video games, and what Ive researched in the last 2 hours. Through all the research I've dont, this is the ONLY bayonet that resembles the one ive found. The quillon, the forward locking screw, even the rivets in the grip match the one I found. I can provide a pic if u want to contact me through my profile. Have you had any luck identifying your bayonet?	06-21-2012
