At least it wasn’t red.
Could be turned into a fun .22.
Try posting on the CMP forum. There are some knowledgeable Mark II collectors there.
I think you’ve got it backwards. Sounds like the barrel may be short chambered and just needs a reaming.
I’d ask on the M14 forums. There a couple of guys who would probably be able to help.
A couple of recent posts on this topic over at the M14 forums:

I highly doubt that the CMP is repairing stocks to improve lockup.
I believe that the square P is an indication of (the stock at least) being rebuilt at San Antonio Arsenal or Red River Army Depot.
That is incredible. It almost looks photoshopped!
Are the guide ribs modified?
Anyone know if the stripes on the aircraft were only used on D-Day, or were they used beyond then as well?
My grandfather was an aircraft radio technician in the Air Corps. He was stationed in...
Those cutoff M60s were used in helicopters, no?
Those are cool, but remember that a blueprint is an early form of photocopy. So those are copies not originals. Still worth something. They would look good framed and hanging on someone’s wall.
Maybe something that will dissolve the copper enough to loosen it without damaging the bore?
Ooh, a shortened M1917. Cool.
Yes, that is interesting. Apparently Nicolaus Associates sells that set.
I look forward to seeing what you’ve got. Maybe you are thinking of the so called USMC 1952 (or whatever you want to call it), which is just a regular M1C with a Kollmorgan scope and different mount.
That can’t be right. M1Cs were only made at Springfield Armory. The receivers were drilled and tapped before heat treating.
The kit would have included the M1D replacement barrel with block pre-installed.
The vast majority of M1Ds are with the “555” M1D specifically machined barrels. However, there have been a few...
Yes, the D takes a different barrel. Remove the old and install the D barrel. They would have needed to be reamed to proper headspace as well.
Wow, that is cool. What did it sell for?
Nice!
It’s back up…
I believe it is surmised that the USMC barrels with vise marks were all installed at the same depot at approximately the same time as a part of a specific rebuild program in the early days of WW2. ...
I haven’t had any trouble accessing the CMP forums, until this afternoon…
