Yes you are correct. I wonder, are there any markings at all on the unfinished cylinder? Can it be a reproduction? Metal surface just not the fine grain finish of an original unit. Almost like a sand...

That is gilding metal transfer from the bullets. As Jmoore said you can remove it with JB Bore Paste, follow the instructions. You can also use a chemical bore stripper like 7.62 or the foaming type....

The one I rode in was a cast hull M4 and had a Continental Radial engine in it, runs on aviation gas. The other Sherman they have is a welded hull and has a conventional V engine.
