Really nice find. The paper work was a big score,I"d have bought it too,its dated my birthday!
One more point to keep in mind, the 17 is battle sighted somewhere around 200 odd yards. My 17 with lc ball shoots very high on the target at 100 yards with 6 inch groups. At 50 yards the bullets may...
What ammo are you shooting? 17"s like heavier bullets so if your shooting 150 grain step up to 168-180,non boat tail.I have a 17 that will shoot 1.5 inches with Remington 168 grain hand loads, but is...
John F,what do you shoot for ammo? Will brass resized in a .308 die work,or is this a milsurp 7.62 only rifle?
I couldnt, but the worlds full of clever guys.....
Just how does a guy know its not a humped up stock?Seems easy to machine a notch in a C stock.
Al,that looks super ! I wouldnt have guessed you could have gotten it that light.Ive got a 17 about the same before color.Going to have to try it.
If you have a mike check the dimensions against the bolts from the other rifles. If you find a overall length difference,or a difference in bolt lug dimensions then you have the answer.
Almost too good.I would have to see the paper work up close. If every Marine brought home the rifle that saved him in WW11 they wouldnt have had enough rifles left to go to korea with in 52 !
Came out really nice. You did a nice job of fitting the piece of wood in the trigger guard cut out.
They are 1903a3 bolts.Could be Remington, but could also be one of the others,Commercial Controls etc.As long as it head spaces it will be fine for a shooter 1903.If you need the 03 to be correct keep...
Man,did you do well,or what !
Daveboy,They kept them because the military was a penny pinching out fit before WW11.They had LOTS of M1917 rifles, but didnt ever really like them, and got rid of them by giving them to any country...
Your right in the ball park at 650.00 .The bayonet and scabbard if original, and unsharpened are 110.00 bucks alone,so you did well.
Squeaky wheel gets the grease.I would call, and ask to talk to some kind of manager.
Interesting that several have M1917"s.Would a unit have a mixed issue?
The cure is a 100 buck barreled receiver from CMP.You met one of lifes bad guys for sure.I would post his name on every forum as a buyer beware. If you know how to set up web sites you could take a...
Yea,finishing that would separate the men fron the boys.
Dont wait too long to decide if you need that new barrel.Last time they had them they sold out in about a week. They get them about once a year so they move quick.
looks like a Krag rear sight.Possible M1917 trigger guard.
If the receiver/barrel are the WW11 gray green park I would leave it alone. You really cant replace that look, even if worn.As for bands, trigger guard, you can still find those parts with the original...
The late 65 series bolt may also get you back in spec. Its possible that the lugs of you bolt are worn, and a bolt thats seen less service may be all it takes.
JA barrels dont cause cracking.IF damage was done ,it was caused by Eddystone over torquing the original barrel puting strain on the receiver. If a relief cut is made just ahead of the receiver the...
Put it on Gun broker,or Ebay, and find out.You may be surprised.I would start at 150-170.
It seems the laws of Physics have expired some how.A go gauge is used to cut a minimum depth chamber. The bolt should close on it.The no go is to tell a gunsmith when to stop before he cuts too...
