Thought the same thing.
Yes, it's my starter kit all right, and will have to be my finisher kit as well. The price of L42A1 stewardship isn't for the faint of heart.
That stock has already been sanded quite a bit, as can be seen in the photos showing the forend and lower band. In fact, the furniture is "proud" of the wood in every photo. Maybe your best bet here...
Unfortunately, I only have the items in the photos.
Here are some photos of my L42A1, 'scope, can, and chest.
I tried to get shots of anything that looked pertinent, but feel free to discard any that aren't, and please let me know if you need...
WOW!!! Apologies for being unable to say anything more constructive or helpful than that, but you've really done nice work on that old Sparkbrook. Since its last (of three?) rebuild(s) was ca. 100...
I've found that the Hornady round nose 180gr perform very nicely. Have loaded it in several Krags. Also, their 150gr. RN. Only tried the 150gr. in one rifle, but was pleasantly surprised. Fed...
Bought several chrome M1903's once (one was a MkI), took them to a chrome shop and had the chrome removed for about $75 each. They came out really nice- I had worried that the shop might go...
They don't ship to Canada?! Why, those....! I see their prices have climbed some, too. As far as parts, OA, FA, BA, and WA (Wellington feeder factory) marked are all good to go on your rifle. Best...
Springfield Sporters, (ssporters.com) in Pennsylvania, will have a number of Australian and British SMLE parts and they're fairly inexpensive. FA is the Forbes feeder factory, OA is the Orange...
Thanks SW, just couldn't seem to get it together at Perry this year. I'm just glad they didn't make me give the T-shirt back! But there's no denying, it was a hell of a good time shooting a great...
I'll have to confess that I'm one of those that shot rotten (234-2) with an SMLE (MkIII*,1918 EFD) this year, but am happy to see somebody shot well with one. 286-3 is a GREAT score!
I could certainly be mistaken, but isn't "furniture" the bands etc. that go on the stock, and not the wood itself?
Use the HXP, save the RG. HXP is excellent brass, non-corrosive, boxer primed. RG will be 70 years old, Berdan primed and corrosive. Leave it in the cellophane and keep it, or sell it to a...
Krags seem to do best with 180-220gr bullets pushed at moderate velocity --use published data--, and most people find they feed through the magazine more reliably with round nose bullets rather than...
Hi Bill, can't help you with the history of those rifles per se, but #323047 is a Model 1884 and #550512 is a Model 1888. They should both have the "Buffington" rear sight, adjustable for windage...
It looks like a great project, entirely restorable. You might have a decent bore there. Unless it was fired with corrosive primed ammunition and left to rot, you have a good chance of actually...
Thank you, sir.
Hello Simon, Do you have any info regarding L42A1 #H32889?
Thanks,
Phil
Thanks much, Vintage Hunter. That's roughly what I'd thought but as you say, there aren't that many of them around for sale.
Apologies if my description is too vague and fraught with variables for a good answer. This is the first time I've ever posted a "What's it worth?"-type question. Thanks.
Congrats on your new K31. I've never seen one with SN on the buttplate and band (never say never , but I don't think it was normally done to those parts) so don't worry. If the wood is "very nice...
Hi all. I got one from NAC 20 odd years ago and am badly behind the times as to what range of prices these are bringing now. Rifle, 'scope, can, and box. Thanks,
Phil
Very nice. It's probably been like that for decades, but the lower band is on backwards.
Just finished reading this story. Just want to say "Well Done", all of you. This caper could be a book by itself. Heartfelt Thanks to Ian's Dad, and to all those like him.
