Put the barreled action in a freezer for a day or two to see if that will loosen it.
I've only seen the "DP" stamp on the P-14s. If the bore is in good shape, $5-600 would be reasonable.
I too have a sxs Baker gun that bubba did a cleaning job on. I figure he did $800+ dollars worth of damage to what was a $500 gun. I think refinishing the twist steel barrel maybe the hardest part
I had to clean out a storage locker once. I found to early '70s Kirby vacs with a complete set of atatchments, floor waxer, buffers, appolstery shampooer. They were tanks and still worked.
Could the "8" in .308 be a misshaped 3? Seams like a lot of work to change from the fatter rimmed .303, to a .308. If it's the original barrel, how will accuracy be in the long run, since the .303...
Weren't some of the 1917's that saw service in the philippines also shortened?
You could try white vinegar to remove the rust. I would try it on something else, or an underneath area first. I also have a beaumont that needs some conservation work. I haven't decided if I want to...

You might try posting on the P-14/1917 forum further down
I had a military history teacher, in highschool. His saying was "Fire enrages, Steel chills".

I'm not a precision shooter, But I do recall that many people reported getting better results with flat based bullets, in their 1917's.
Thanks everyone. It is the Italian round. It hs a short, aluminum looking bullet, in the mouth, that measures 21mm, in diameter.
I have a trench art round, from my grandparents. My grandfather never went to europe during WW11. Appears to be about 20mm. It has palm trees on it and comes apart with the bottom half being a...
I am not sure what caused the marking on the barrel, but the receiver shows the heat treatment.

There is a really good book on the 1917 by C.F. Ferris, (I think). I can't find my copy, right now.
I was on the Carl Vinson. Weapons and reactors kept us anchored off shore while they ran liberty boats, in and out. Officers first followed by senior enlisted. By the time we made it ashore, there...
Been there and done that a few times. Surplus ammo ain't cheap anymore.
If polishing doesn't work, you could install a sub caliber insert and have an easy shooting rifle.
There is a Forgotten Weapons video on the single shots from Ethiopia. Maybe yours is related to them.
I've got one that's worse. Not a garand, but an 1880's Baker dounle barrel shotgun. The nimrod before me sanded the finish off of the damascus barrels. The stock had a bad shrinkage crack that had...
Back in the early 90s, that is what I did. Built a rifle combining several styles. A real mutt. But I did it and it goes bang. Ruined one stock while inletting the barrel. I used a tulle fussil stock...
