The plunger should nearly go all the way back up into the flag of the safety. But the spring is very stiff once the coils are pushed together.
More than likely it has some accumulated debris...
It could just be a reflection of the light from barrel straitening or “setting in” from the manufacturing process.
I think for 200 dollars that’s a good deal.
I would put it together but if your time pressed moving it along may be a good idea.
Personally , my time for something I like to do I don’t worry much...

If anyone has any spares and can part with one, that would be very helpful to me.
Thanks for looking.
I just went and looked at notes quickly for a Garand I have. Its five digit/w 44 barrel, saw cut gas cylinder. #20555 or something like that.
Nothing extra ordinary I can tell from it other than it...
That looks like a somewhat challenging project.

It appears to be machined differently than the others.
You never know, maybe the barrel underside will be coated with old grease that preserved it somewhat.
That's what I found when I broke mine down.
It seemed as if it was made of animal fat or...
Good advice above thank you.
Especially the firing pin protrusion I would more than likely be checking first.
That’s what I learned with a Martini rifle I just picked up.
It was the last thing...

Sometimes , a light stippling of the dovetail slot will raise just enough metal to give an extra purchase to prevent unwanted movement.
I’m interested in understanding what production / examination tasks occurred at station 3?
