    Minor League Mystery

    A smooth-sided cocking piece with a half-cock notch.
No maker's mark on it---just the small crown, as you can see.

Is it marked with a V in a circle? It's a forth variation.

Not exactly sure what a fourth variation is, since I don't speak Strattonese. Nevertheless, I will forge ahead blindly...
The Minor League Mystery is the half-cock notch and not the smooth cocking piece itself. Most of the smoothies are like the Singer Manufacturing one in this thumb, sans half-cock.
Does Skip list a "variation" with half cock?

    Major League finds.

It would appear your "second" photo is from the minors.

MCB, Stratton used the word 'variation' because that is what Cape Pulications wanted...he never really liked it because it gave the appearance of deliniation.

Yes, both types of the smooth cocking piece are shown in his book.
