Arrow 10-229 Garand Picture of the Day - Operation Varsity

A Paratrooper from the 507th P.I.R., 17th Airborne Division, allows combat photographer Robert Capa to snap this shot, moments before boarding a transport plane that is taking part in Operation Varsity, a combined American/Britishicon drop to establish a bridgehead across the Rhine, near the town of Wesel Germanyicon. Capa actually jumped with the 507th, and took some of the Wars best Air-Drop photos.

A little more info – the subject of the photo is Jim Conboy of the 513HQ Company. He survived the war answering the final roll call in 2004. He lost a leg due to combat injuries.
