I can see where those three guys with shovels could greatly improve that road. Not.
Blowing a mine in place has always seemed safer for everybody in my experience. While being able to defuse a mine is possible the addition of a live grenade under the mine is a distinct possibility....
I think I'd sling my carbine rather than rest it on my cojones.
Coats, not anorak's, which is my understanding of what that type of outer wear was. And generally of camouflage material.
I'm pretty sure those kids are glad their war is over.
Nice understatement. ;)
I said fewer, not none. And having served 24 years I'll stand by that observation.
I must have stared at that wall for 20 minutes reading the names thinking of how they must have felt before the Arizona blew up. I'm just sorry we have such fewer men of that caliber today.
...
Me too. I've been fortunate to have visited the USS Arizona also. A moving experience to say the least and I took pictures of that wall.
I've been there, it was impossible to not weep there or viewing "The Wall."
I did say "few." The P-39 had a 37mm cannon firing through the propeller hub, so that's two in 1939. And we knew nothing of the "Zero" at the time.
There were few aircraft with 20mm cannon in 1939. Most had rifle caliber machine guns and the US was the only one at the time to use .50 caliber guns.
Which leads me to believe the picture was posed. Nobody with brains sits behind a bazooka when it is fired.
Yes, it was a bitter battle.

Having once spent 3 years stationed at Ft. Ord I can pretty much say that there is/was no safe space around the billets to fire live ammunition. Ord's rifle ranges were over the beach firing into the...

When well trained, fed, paid, and led the South Vietnamese did a good job. There are no bad soldiers not made that way by poor leadership and support. With the exception of the occasional loser that...
That's 3rd ID, "Busted Television", 4th is the "Ivy Division" and I was in that division for a couple of years.
More likely than not covering fire. The rifleman gets them to duck and the Thompson guys rush and hose 'em down and maybe toss a grenade. My thought only.
As we are not quite seeing the entire handguard yet can see his supporting hand how can you determine there is no magazine in the first weapon?
That medic appears to wearing galoshes over his boots. Never seen that before.
I'm sorry for you, it would have broken my heart also.
I was a Lynyrd Skynyrd fan from the very beginning. The plane crash was a tragedy. And though to old to fight Tyrone Power did his bit to help win the war. I watched most his movies as a kid on TV...
I did and my comment was merely meant to reinforce that comment.
Looking at Mt. Surbachi it appears to have plant growth on it. It was totally divested of plant growth during the battle. In the pacific islands plants grow pretty fast in 10 or so years.
