What is the evidence? To strip nickel off steel you need something like sulphuric or nitric acid. Definitely the kind of chemical that would ruin any kind of finish it touches, including your skin. And a Ballistol salesman at a machinery fair near here showed me that you can actually drink it - it tastes very odd, and I'm not sure what it's supposed to cure!
You can read all about it here;

I wonder if the stuff sold in the USA
is different?

Ballistol probably tastes like some of the cheap beer here!

If that's what your beer tastes like, I'll stick to wine!

Try G96 silicone spray. It's also friendly to all surfaces including wood.

Germans of a certain generation fervently believe that Ballistol not only heals athlete´s foot but is also good for bullet wounds and maybe even cancer.
I personally prefer ACF-50 anti-corrosi0n formula as I work on aircraft.

I talked to one of the curators at the Cody Museum and he said they used a type of wax that at the present, I can't remember. SORRY I can't be of more help.
