Never seen a BSA 44 either, but as you say, none of us have seen 'em all.

That's interesting. I'd not even come across the straight sided protectors until I found out about the rifle I subsequently bought. I note yours isn't a really early one, but it is quite early. Using up existing stocks of flash eliminators perhaps????

My 9/44 doesn't have straight sided protectors. There again, whatever box of flash hiders got opened is what they used during production.

A friend saw an FE pre-fix in the Bob Faris collection, dated 12/43 , with a two or three-digit serial number.

A fellow has been trying to sell what is claimed to be a March/44 No.5 with serial #46, and matching numbers.
Britishicon Enfield NO. 5 Jungle Carbine Serial #46 : Curios & Relics at GunBroker.com

He's had it on the market for a number of months -- no takers at $1000.

I've been seeing that for a while, has the metal end on the stock. His pictures aren't that good for the high price of his guns.

If it had a low digit FE prefix s/n then it might be legit & potentially push production back another month or two but with a B prefix, buyer beware!

Other than the later forend, all looks legit, even has the early large bolt hole (but a re-numbered bolt) & small aperture rear sight.
