Used for soft ground are they Jim to get better weight distribution across soft dirt.
The Germans in WWII in Russia
soon learnt why the T-34's had that waffle type tracks for the soft ground.....

Sure, all of that. We used to have our end connectors break off at intervals, not all at once. One here, one there, a row at a time... We'd just leave them until major maintenance.
