Looks like an optical sight case. Guy on the left has a flat case looks like a clinometer case.

I really don't think it's a Jap Officer's mess kit, out of time and space.... I can't find the weapon sight box I speak of so I can't show you...not the M3 mortar sight, it's longer I think...

No not Jap - similar to - but could not find any NKA mess tin or Chinese that looked similar - maybe M6 scope case
