Which Glock?

There is the possibility that I will have an opportunity to do a swap and get a Glock pistol. The neat thing is I'll likely get to pick the caliber. All three are standard size pistols in excellent to new condition. This will not be a target pistol. I don't know about the 9mm. I've had 1911 type pistols in .45 ACP and I've shot a Sig in .40 S&W. Since it's for protection, I'm leaning toward going for the .40 S&W. My brother was a deputy sheriff, but I can't ask him since he is deceased. Suggestions would be appreciated. Sincerely. BruceV.

Model 22 .40 caliber. I carried one for the SO before they went to them. Great weapon. I shoot the model 35 .40 for IPSC. The .40, you won't be unhappy. Just remember, no reloads with lead bullets and be careful with the loads you go with!

I don't know the model numbers of the Glocks. I think the 9mm is a M-17. What is the number for a standard type Glock in .40 and .45? I've been thinking the .40 might be the way to go. When my brother passed away I was given all his old brass. I know he preferred a .45 ACP. I must have at least 3-4000 .45 ACP cases. I've been thinking I could reload for either round. if I get the .40, there should be someone I can trade with for some .40 brass.

Model 22 is the .40 and the model 21 is the .45. Both are standard full sized models.

The .40 is a good pistol for self defense. Easy made and it works under the badest cirumstances. The .45 is not my favorite because the chamber is not complet around the case only a little more then the half case is in the chamber. There were some problems with strong ammo and splitting chambers. The 9mm is also good but the .40 is a better argument against them who stand on the dangerous side.

I wish now that I'd had a chance to shoot more with my brother. From time to time I'd drive up to Macon and we would go out to the gun club where he would bring pistols and boxes of old ammunition (.38, .45 and .40). He and I would loan each other pistols, etc. Those days are gone. Now I've got to pick something and stick with it. The more I read about the .40 S&W, the better I like it. I think maybe the Glock is going to be alright too. Sincerely. BruceV.

Personally, I would go with the Model 21 in 0.45 ACP but reload with clad bullets. Although not a fully supported chamber, the 0.45 is not a high pressure round whereas the 0.40 is (relative terms), thus a slight overload in the 0.45 is not a problem, but it can be in a 0.40. My 0.40s are not Glocks but Brownings, Berettas and Walthers, all with fully supported chambers. dave_n

There you have my quandary. I have had a variety of 1911 type pistols all in .45ACP. I have not owned a Glock. However my brother owned 5 of them and swore by them for duty work. He said he never had a problem with any of them. Knowing how little tolerance he had for malfunctions, I think he probably never had a problem with them. If this deal goes through, the pistol will spend most of its time with me in the car and motel rooms. My wife drives a little over 100 miles daily for work and will be carrying it in the car to and from work.

You already have 1911's for protection so you're OK in that area. This sounds to me like the Glock will be more sentimental than anything else. In that case, (If it were me) I'd choose his favorite one regardless of caliber.

I have a rifle and a shotgun which I inherited. Neither are my favorite caliber or gauge nor do I use them as tools. I take them out once in a while just to punch paper and clays and reminisce about one of the great men who taught me to hunt and fish.

The .40 is not a fully supported in the Glock either. That was one of the big issues for reloading. That and people were using lead bullets and gumming up the barrels with lead transfer.

The .45 is nice and my preferred choice in the S/A XD but not Glock. Unless you have some good sized meat hooks stay clear of the Model 21 .45 Glock. I shoot Winchester Ranger SXTs out both my Glock .40 and S/A XD .45.
