    Thumbs down Value of rifle

I have a friend that wants my M-1 for matches...It is a CMPicon from 1984 with a heavy barrel in 7.62 from Shooters Choice...It has NM sights and a B Jones lens for my old eyes.It has been glass bedded by the best around here ....Shoots better than I can...Walnut stock.....What should I ask?...It is a beautiful rifle, has an laser etched rear sight cover that states " 7.62 ".....About 200 rounds thru this barrel. I only want to sell the rifle to him.... Opinions Please... Thanks Charlie..

there is more demand for standard shooters than match tweaked rifles, thus the most you would ever likely get via an online auction is about 800-900. If the sights are "real" NM sights and not the usual copies, add another 100 bucks. There is no premium for a walnut stock. Were it not bedded and an original nice USGI stock and hand-guard set, it might have added 50-100 more. I suspect you probably have a commercial Boyds stock. The sight cover came from Tim "ShooterM1" and while nice, has no effect on value.

I would say it is worth the sum of the parts. It would have no collector value and that is where the money is. If you were to put it on G.B., and a few shooters wanted it, you might get what it is truely worth. As you are considering selling it to a friend, why not just figure what you have in the rifle and let it go at that.

I think I paid $126 for the rifle and $250 for the barrel and 80 for the bedding.
The NM sights were $125...I forget the B jones lens, but I suspect he will need them...

I'm going to find out what CMPicon M-1s go for and add 125 for the NM sights as everyone wants them......Thanks Charlie

    M1icon Garand, SA Service Grade
Please allow 180 days for delivery
    *See below for grade description
    $595

    Plus $ 20.00 for shipping

    so that's $ 615.00 plus $ 125.00 for NM sights = $ 740.00
Considering the $ 330.00 you put into it for the bedding and barrel, I would think about $ 850.00 would be fair to the both of you.

I would urge you to take it to a gunshow and let a reasonable dealer (is there such a thing?) suggest a fair retail and wholesale value.

While I see nothing wrong with "doing a friend a favor" keep in mind that such a rifle today may cost you three times what you paid for it just to acquire the parts to make it again. Fairly ratty looking M1icon's are selling for $600-800 on the open market and SG's are a far cry from what you describe. Add to that six months waiting time for a rifle that needs a stock, bedding, sights and a barrel for $400. At 200 rounds, the barrel is the same as new. Service grades are only shootable, not heavy target barrels. Sounds more like $1500-2000 to get 'er done and I would submit that $1500 would be a fair asking price if it were on the open market.

No friend would want to take advantage of you by buying something from you for half or less of market value. You might decide you wanted more when you see those for sale on the market, so do some shopping around and make sure you are comfortable with letting such a firearm go for far below market.

I personally don't see anyone buying and selling firearms like this for $800-900. Maybe there are a dearth of them in your region and they are that cheap, but I have to say I have some reservations about that.

I recently sold the rifle your described (except in 30-06). Settled on $900.00. I actually thought I did OK (I didn't have much in it). Like others stated, match grade Garands aren't in much demand.
