Talking FS Port Contract k-98 (CGN Private Ad)

Now, here's the type of ad that really irritates me.

It's a premium priced item with no pics, or even an offer to provide pics suggested in the body of the ad, yet the seller says Not interested in tire-kickers, or trades. Serious buyers only.

Not to just pick on this seller, but in general, some of the folks that post ads on CGN (and many other forums) need to take a course in salesmanship, or find a ghost writer to help them with their efforts. It ceases to amaze me how so many people can post so many bad ads and then wonder why they don't get a serious response, or get people who enquire, but they never respond back. Courtesy is a reciprocating behavior.

This might be a very good buy, but who will ever know and I for one, even though I'm interested, wouldn't bother to enquire about pics as I'd be worried about getting my head taken off for appearing like a "tire kicker".

If you can't view the advertisement, it's probably due to the fact that you have to subscribe to the EE (Equipment Exchange) forums on CGN, or the ad has been deleted, in order to view them.

    Seller says:

Portuguese 1941 Mauser Werke Oberndorf A/N k-98. This rifle was not sitting in some warehouse, shows use, but not abuse. Original Wehrmacht sling(L&F). All matching, bolt, safety, receiver, barrel, rear sight, stock, buttplate, magazine plate, screws, upper band, magazine follower, bayonet lug. Very few dings on stock, crest is still visible on left buttstock, but faint. Bluing is 70-75%. Chamber is shiny, bore is shiny, but not sharp. All stampings are clear. Not interested in tire-kickers, or trades. Serious buyers only. $925+ shipping.

Note- Identical rifle on page 319- "Backbone Of The Wehrmacht"
BTW, if anyone buys this piece (or gets pics), here's the entry with a 182 picture photo gallery in the Milsurp Knowledge Libraryicon, as to what it should look like.

I agree. I post pics even with $50 items. Spend a few minutes writing a solid description and add a few pics, and you'll only get serious buyers, not picture collectors. If it's worth your while for a $50 item, it's worthwhile for a $925 item!

As for the warning about "tire-kickers", all it does is let you know he's got an attitude and drives away potential buyers.

Frankly, there have been maybe three times EVER that I wrote a seller to see pics for my "picture collection". In all cases, I started out my PM with: "Hi, sorry to bother you as I really don't intend to buy your rifle, but the description interests me greatly and I'd love to see the pictures you are sending to serious buyers - would that be possible?".

In all cases, the sellers sent the pics and even engaged in a pm conversation with me about the piece. In one instance I ended up buying the rifle though I really hadn't planned to in the first place.

I also find that if you give a really great backgrounder on a weapon and take a few pics, you sell the gun faster and for more money 100% of the time.

I don't mean to offend anyone, but this same seller recently sold an "all matching non-refurb K98kicon with original l&f sling" which turned out to be a Frenchicon rework with the stock dished out for sling rings, and the bayonet lug cut off. I asked him for pics and the dish job showed up, but he never sent pics of the bayo lug, nor mentioned it, and I only found out from the guy who ended up buying it.

I spoke to the fellow who bought it and then returned it and he said that the sling was actually a repro as well.

I also bought a CNo.7 from him a while ago which I think was somewhat misrepresented in his pics (the pics purposely left out blemishes and a repro screw) and description which mentioned neither of those concerns.

SO I wasn't too surprised when I saw anyother vague ad from him.

    You're not offending anyone ....

The purpose of this forum is to help our Contributing Members avoid questionable items, while at the same time tipping them off when we see some excellent values in private sales.

The only thing we ask is that people remain civil, stick to the facts and present empirical data with pics when possible.

Thanks for posting, as I'm sure it will help somebody here ...

    Badger

Then again I just sent pics to someone, and asked if he was looking for something specific.

His reply was that they were really nice, he'd like to have the piece, but he didn't have any money!

Maybe spurious requests for pics are more prevalent than we think.

Might as well post pics in the first place then, avoid having to respond to tire kickers all together.

    Excellent....

If it's all correct and matches the MKLicon entry shown above, then you will have a very nice addition to your collection.

Post some pics here so we can help with your pre-inspection analysis.

BTW, there's also another one being offered for sale in the Quartermaster Stores for $1100.00.

    Im hopeing for the best.

Ive had a 41 dated port before, so i know what to look for, and this wont be my first all matching mauser.

and on the plus side, it comes with a correct sling, which in itself is a hard to come by item now a days.
