Question CZ 858/VZ 58 Side/Saddle Mount vs rails and what optics?

There's a lot of buzz over on CGN about NEA top and bottom handguards with rails and what shooters are mounting.

Wondering what VZ 58 owners and CZ 858 owner having been using and why?

I have been using the PRI upper H/G rail. It's a nice , well built rail -- but co-witness is important to me and the PRI is little too high. Czechpoint-USA started listing the Canadianicon NEA rail a few days ago. I plan on getting one after my credit cards recover from Christmas and Valentine's Day.

I hear you. I'm in the same position. I have a set of NEA uppers and lowers on order.

In the Red Rifles and the Optics forums of CGN there are threads about the NEAs and co witnessing irons. I plan on using my EoTech 552 once I get the hand guards for my 858 though recently someone posted that the 512 won't fit the upper rail. Charles Martel from NEA is looking into this. Other shooters are using Aimpoint Micros and someone mentioned using a Trijicon.

You may want to wait a bit anyhow. The earliest variations of the NEA have a loose detent ball (which posters say have been getting lost) Charles says the latest variations will have the detent ball caged. I'm waiting for this.

A concern for shooters on CGN has been return to zero when removing optics for weapons cleaning. So far reports have been good for the NEA rails. Any comment s out there on RTZ?

I haven't had any RTZ issues with either of my NEA rails, both 3rd and 4th Gen versions.

Here's something different, I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

Is that a scout scope? I was thinking about using an Eotech 552 on my CZ and backing it with a G 23 or Aimpoint 3x magifier for hunting but: 1. not enough room on the rail and 2. not enough eye relief.

Are you planning to hunt with that set up? Let us know how it works please.

It's a 4x, illuminated reticle, LER scope. IMO an Eotech is too tall for the VZ.

I don't hunt. It's just for playing at the range and in the bush.

Haven't tried the 552 yet as I'm waiting on the hand guards but I believe it may not co witness with the front sight.

It absolutely will not co-witness on any mount you can put on a VZ.

You can co-witness with an Aimpoint Micro-sized/shaped optic or other round-type optics in rings that bring them right down close to the rail.

The Bushnell TRS-25 on the top rifle has about a bottom third co-witness. You can't see the irons on the lower Burris FastFire equipped rifle unless they're raised to about the 500m setting. Both optics are a lot lower than an Eotech which is designed to mount directly to a flat-top AR and give an absolute co-witness.

What would be your recommendation then and why?

    For an optic?

If money is no object and you want to co-witness get an Aimpoint Micro. Generally you get what you pay for. I've been happy with my $200-ish Burris FastFire and Bushnell TRS-25 so far. I've also used my Aimpoint Comp M2 on the VZ's.
