Narrow Tang SG Receiver ??
Since I have a extra SG receiver to get rid of, I was looking over auctions and just noticed this on GB.
A SG made receiver with the narrow rear tang.

Very interesting if this is actually an S.G. receiver, Charlie. I downloaded the pix of the heel and tried to zoom in on the letters to verify whether there are prime marks or periods at the SG but the photos are too grainy at magnification to see anything definitive. Of course the SG subcontract letters are clearly visible on the left side of the receiver so it seems likely that the receiver was stamped in Saginaw, Mich. Did the folks in Grand Rapids send a bunch of blank, unstamped receivers to be Saginaw to be completed? It seems the more data relative to IP, S'G' and S.G. comes to light the more confusing it gets! Maybe some other forum member(s) has a similar S.G. carbine with narrow tang that they could comment about.

Painter, S.G. receivers with narrow tangs were sent by Inland when S.G. was setting up their production dyes. I found the transfer in WAR BABY. It was to help S.G. get a fast start on production. I'll go look it up again and let you know what page it's on. I do have one. Got it last year from CMP. lATER, bOB.

Painter, on page 438 is a break down of receivers sent to S.G. Apr. 13 43, 74 receivers sent showing each step in the operation, Again, 58 sent ( 1 after each operation ). There was also 1 scrap receiver. ?? All 132, plus 1 scrap receivers were sent by Inland. May be the rearest of all receivers ???

Page 433 shows a narrow tang receiver with SG on the side, and the text indicates the receivers were manufactured by Saginaw and intended for Inland but used by Saginaw. Page 434 indicates Saginaw also made narrow tang receivers for their own use, which I believe would not have SG on the side, because Larry Ruth did not include that in the description.
I looked this up last week, because when I filled out a data sheet on one of my Saginaws, I noticed for the first time that it had a narrow tang and had SG on the side. I don't know what serial range these variants are likely to have or how many were made, but since I have one, I doubt they are rare.

Mine does not have S G stamped on the left side. ser#3262278. I'll stand by my S.G. being one of the 132 sent by Inland. Bob.

Maybe, but probably not.
When Saginaw Gear first started making receivers they were made to Inland's specs which would have included the narrow tang. As production ramped up at Saginaw Gear several "short cuts" were implemented. One of these was the elimination of the milling on the left side of the recoil plate tang. Look at the Inland/ SG receivers in the 7XX,XXX range. Everyone that is featured as a Carbine Club COM has a narrow tang and they span almost 69,000 serial numbers. The change from narrow to wide appears to have happen around the 800,000 mark. This would have been after Saginaw gear started delivery from their own plant.

Brian, Thanks for the input. I've gone back and reread and looked at the info. you were able to share. I will try to take some pics. and post them for the forum. I might fill out a data sheet and pass it along to John. Later, Bob.

I thank you Brian. Somehow your posting the pics. are clearer than the ones I shot. The last photo of the right rear of the receiver has a P stamped in it the same size as the P that S.G. used to stamp the proof on the barrel. Bob.
