How to restore this mess. Spandau Mauser

Today I bought this at a pawn shop. As far as I can tell it is all matching and other that it being nickel plated I think it has some potential.

My question is how do I get rid of the current finish. ?? Bead blasting?, are there any solvents that can be used?? and once the old finish is off what will the course of action be to refurbish this rifle. Thanks.

There is an acid process to strip chrome or nickel. I used to bead blast it off with silica sand beads. It takes a long time. You need bright light to see the change in colour from the chrome to the under bonding metal to the original metal. Then the re finish as you say. I did it lots with 45s that came from South Americaicon in the 80s. They mostly turned out ok. If you don't get all the chrome you will have a shiney spot. Back to the bead blaster.
    Regards, Jim

FWIW, you can remove nickel through electrochemical means as well - try asking your local plating shop
