    Milsurp Target Competition and Shoot

As brought to you by BigDuke6.

This "Winchester Type 38 Model 70" in 220 Swift was given to me some time back. It was so odd that the conversion of the Japanese action to a fully functional and fairly accurate (if still somewhat homely) status just had to be continued.

Had previously zeroed it with 60gr Nosler Partition bullets to see if they would stabilize (They did), so ran a few factory rounds to rezero, then switched to some new experimental 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tip loads. Probably should have fine tuned a bit more before engaging the "official" target. Some highlights:

    The jungle is encroaching!

The two targets that I had- no reshoots today...

Three rounds factory ammo fired(Left), then five rounds of a never before tired concoction on sighter dot. Then five for score. (Partition bulleted loads on RH side.)

The results: Phooey, a little low! The ancient K2.5 Weaver adjustments aren't the best to adjust on the fly.

OK group, not spectacular: ~1 3/4" (By modern standards anyway.)

    The rifle:

Circa 1941 Winchester barrel. How it was threaded onto an Arisakaicon action I'm afraid to guess!

Not a bad scope really, aside from the less than perfect adjustments- they work, but usually require a round to be fired to settle it into the new zero.

Undefaced Mum... What was it like before the mods, we'll probably never know. Good thing, that!

    Slideshow link for more (Experimental!):

    jmoore,

Nice score, Certanly different, I like the Griffin & Howe mount.

As I,ve said before in posts, there are many who question why someone does this to a Milsurp, but like many rifles that were converted at the time, the future of collecting Milsurps never even entered in to there thoughts, the prority then was to put meat on the table, would say this may have provided a few meals in its time.

Had a fellow machinist who does benchrest rifles and some general crafting attach a new bolt handle to the bolt that locked up the tightest in this rifle. There's little clearance under the eyepiece. The stock alreadt had a cut for a low handle which ended up not being an exact match, but it's needs only a little more tweaking. The down side of the selected bolt is that the small extentions at the front left on the bolt were removed, so the extractor tends to drop empties after primary extraction. No biggie.

Low bridge! The handle DOES miss the scope bell, but pretty much no other scope than the early K2.5 will fit. Quite a bother. Can't find a regular 2.5x scope with which to deer hunt so far.

I re-bedded the action in the stock (and sank it down so the magazine body fit properly) and added a Timney trigger. Also shortened the follower and made a block for the rear of the magazine well.

Sorry for the glare! After donning your sunglasses, please note the filler block at the rear to keep the rounds from shifting excessively.

ETA: Might as well show the sight in target as well, so all rounds are counted for this outing.

I had voiced concern that things could go easily overboard, so hopefully this thread will show just how little prep can be involved!:

The rifle has been sitting unfired for a year or so. (Because of the lack of a lower powered scope.)
The rounds are either factory or some experimental loads assembled, ummm, also a long time ago.
Only had two "official" (they're actually a little undersized) targets, one was punctured by another rifle.
Note the lack of fancy shooting rests. Old leaky rear sandbag, and some wood covered by a towel up front.

In actual fact, it was a good day at the range. A few dramas, but little stress.
