Milsurp Target Competition and Shoot

This "Winchester Type 38 Model 70" in 220 Swift was given to me some time back. It was so odd that the conversion of the Japanese action to a fully functional and fairly accurate (if still somewhat homely) status just had to be continued.

Had previously zeroed it with 60gr Nosler Partition bullets to see if they would stabilize (They did), so ran a few factory rounds to rezero, then switched to some new experimental 55gr Nosler Ballistic Tip loads. Probably should have fine tuned a bit more before engaging the "official" target. Some highlights:


The jungle is encroaching!



The two targets that I had- no reshoots today...


Three rounds factory ammo fired(Left), then five rounds of a never before tired concoction on sighter dot. Then five for score. (Partition bulleted loads on RH side.)


The results: Phooey, a little low! The ancient K2.5 Weaver adjustments aren't the best to adjust on the fly.




OK group, not spectacular: ~1 3/4" (By modern standards anyway.)


The rifle:




Circa 1941 Winchester barrel. How it was threaded onto an Arisaka action I'm afraid to guess!



Not a bad scope really, aside from the less than perfect adjustments- they work, but usually require a round to be fired to settle it into the new zero.






Undefaced Mum... What was it like before the mods, we'll probably never know. Good thing, that!
