Thanks for the really interesting article. On the issue of the split foresight block (2nd par under full right side view pic of rifle) there's been a good debate about this on Milsurps. It is fair to say that a lot of 4ts currently in existence have the solid block, with very knowledgeable members believing that this was not an uncommon configuration eg:

Thanks. A very interesting resume. The 'R' prefix serial number block seems to be the cross-over point for 1944/45 production. I have owned both 1944 & 1945 dated BSA 4T's. There are also other letter prefixes as well as those quoted. I can't pretend to have an exhaustive list but I must have well over 150 rifle serial numbers recorded & will try & look out all of the different prefix letters. Don't forget of course that there is also a 3XXXX digit run with no letter prefix. Perhaps the first block of 1944, using the 'five digit starting with a 3' system. I have also seen a very few 1944 dated rifles (2 or 3 IIIRC) that bore the typical earlier type serial numbers usually seen on 1943 dated weapons, eg AU 9815, AV 0219 etc.
